Mark Papermaster – Apple iPhone 4 Designer's Departure Leaves

While news articles following Papermaster’s exit associated his departure with antennagate – “Apple Exec Exits after iPhone Antennagate”, “Executive Leaves After iPhone Trouble” – Papermaster’s swift departure leaves questions still unanswered. Even more peculiar was Apple had initially claimed iPhone 4 problems were software, not hardware. Apple had before Papermaster’s exit said a “big drop in bars [being displayed] is because their high bars [displayed] were never real in the first place.” Apple associated the problem with a formula error, not a hardware error. “We were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong.”

CUPERTINO (LALATE) – Mark Papermaster’s abrupt departure from Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) following iPhone 4 antenna problems still leaves questions unanswered. Mark Papermaster’s swift departure days ago prompted some technology news to report that his bio was swiftly purged off the Apple website while equally reporting if “it’s not clear if he was fired of if he resigned” (CNET).

Mark Papermaster was brought to Apple in November 2008 as Senior VP of Devices Hardware Engineering. His direct supervisor was Steve Jobs. Jobs said of Papermaster at the time “Mark is a seasoned leader and is going to be an excellent addition to our senior management team.” But days ago, Papermaster was quickly out at Apple after antenna problems plagued the iPhone 4.  Papermaster was responsible for the device’s design and engineering.

CNET reports that Apple had difficulty hiring Papermaster in the first place with IBM suing Papermaster claiming his Apple 2008 employment violated his noncompete agreement. While joining the team in November 2009, Apple and IBM reportedly settled the disagreement with Papermaster starting work in April 2009. Papermaster will now be replaced by Bob Mansfield, senior VP of Mac engineering.
