I will lead this off by saying that I am not an iPod touch user which means that I cannot verify this personally. That said, according to Pocket Gamer, Apple is now allowing iPod touch users to update to OS 3.0 for free.
For those looking to update their iPod touch, just connect to iTunes and you should be prompted. No word on if this will become a typical update pattern for Apple, but I seem to remember them making iPod touch updates free in the past — after they had been available for a little while.
Just as when asked to download and install the latest firmware on an iPhone, iTunes simply asks for confirmation – no signing in to pay for the software.”
Ultimately this means that iPod touch users will be updated to OS 3.1.3 and more importantly will now be able to take advantage of some of the apps that require 3.0 or later.
“Syncing a second generation iPod touch today with an older version of the software prompted me to accept the free upgrade. How exciting.
