And yes, it is ridiculously expensive given its purpose, but I would have gladly kept it had it been able to interface with the USB port in my car. Sadly, this has been my experience with all TomTom products… they are good on the surface until that one glaring omission or “feature” manifests itself.

Regardless, I bought one because I found it for $119 at the Apple Store. I can say it works flawlessly with the Navigon software. The bad reviews the device is getting are from the fact that the mount will fall into portrait mode when you hit a bump. This is not really accurate. You don’t notice it at first but you can slide the mount up and down which fully prevents that from happening. The people who gave the device bad reviews probably didn’t realize this. When you take the mount out of the box it’s all the way extended and will fall into portrait mode very easily unless you slide it to the right a bit so the weight is balanced. Once you do that it will stay in the correct position regarldess of how bumpy the road is.

One other thing I really liked about this mount is the fact that I didn’t have to take my iPhone out of the case to use it. I highly recommend this mount. It is compact, well built and gets great reception. The speaker is also loud and clear. The design of the suction cup is excellent as well, it’s got a dial on it that lets you really crank it down so it won’t come off the window regardless of the humidity or temperature. Great device.

My biggest gripe is that the phone is $189 on amazon and $119 directly from Apple.

It is only $119 on TomTom’s web site so why $157 here? Four stars because it works well per other reviews.

This unit does have its flaws, one of which made it useless for my own application.

First, the volume selector ends up behind the phone while it is docked, therefore making it nearly impossible to reach.

The positive – I bought it and installed it with no problem. It works great and really boosts the GPS in my iphone. It holds the phone securely. It also boosts the volume from the phone to the car stereo – more so than my other adapter which required me to turn my car stereo up loud just to hear music on the iphone.

I have no idea why this seller has this kit priced at $195 when it is readily available at the Apple store for $119!

The negative – because of where the wires are, it wants to sit in portrait mode as opposed to landscape. It does not come with an auxiliary cable so that you can listen to the audio through the stereo. You cannot listen to the phone or use the phone through the stereo without bluetooth. When the iphone is out of the cradle, the cradle causes a high pitch whine in the stereo as if you have a bad radio suppressor. The upside is, when you put the phone in the cradle, the interference goes away.

I had high hopes for the TomTom car kit. It mounts nicely on my Pro-Fit clip on the dashboard in my car. The GPS reception is definitely improved. The speaker is loud and easy to understand.

    2. Everyone says you mount falls into portrait mode when you hit a bump.

The reason I returned the unit: There is a mini-usb port on the side of the car kit that is used for power. This port inexplicably DOES NOT pass data, so if you have a USB port in your car and would like to use the steering wheel controls to control tracks, etc., this is not possible.

I was very hesitant about purchasing this mount for two reasons:

    1. I have the Navigon software, not the TomTom application.
